Did you clean out your gutters this Autumn?

Unfortunately not enough of us do.  Clogged gutters are among the most common causes of interior water damage.

As you can see demonstrated in this photo, this customer hadn't cleaned her gutters yet this year.  When we had a strong rain, leaves and other debris clogged the gutters causing water to back-up into the house.  Fortunately for this customer, insurance covered the damage and repairs.

Drain backup floods basement

One of the most common causes of water damage is a backup of the sewer or drain lines.  In this example, tree roots grew into and eventually clogged the sewer line leading to the street.

When a clog occurs, black water gradually accumulates in the sewer pipe eventually leading to backup into the home, which sometimes can be catastrophic, causing all drain openings in the entire house to flood at once.

Luckily for this customer the water damage was limited to the lower levels of the house in only a few drains.  The steps in this cleanup involved clearing the sewer line, performing demolition on affected materials, installing drying equipment, and sanitizing the affected areas.

Shower Water Damage

It's important to check the integrity of water connectors in your home periodically.  In this example, the customer turned off the water to the shower wand but not to the bathtub itself.

When the line burst it caused water to spray at high pressure in all directions.

Security Water Damage from a Ceiling Leak

The peeling paint on the ceiling and walls indicate a significant amount of water is damaging the structure. Scraping away this damaged latex covering can reveal water-logged building materials that either can be dried or are in need of a demolition. In this case, it was more economical and time efficient to do a demo and install new materials.
