Furnace Puff-backs and Resulting Fire Damage in Security

Puff backs can occur when an oil burner malfunctions or suddenly ignites. The resulting pressure can push soots through ventilation ducts into the home environment. Typical evidence of a puff-back is uniform, soiling directly above venting ducts onto the high walls and carpeting below. Often the composition of these soils includes dry soot, wet soot, as well as some fuel oils. Puff-backs are not generally dangerous, but they can be tough to clean, given the variety of soiling. Sometimes walls need to be treated corrosively, which can remove paintwork. Equally, approaching puff-back soiling with just one method can be useful on some soots but spread around others, causing further damage.

Professional remediation and restoration for fire damage in Security are available should your home suffer from a puff-back. After calling SERVPRO, you can begin light-cleaning work on the soiling if you wish. Light-cleaning is dry vacuuming the walls and carpeting with a lightweight tool. Be careful to avoid stepping on areas of carpet that may contain soots. Foot traffic can compress carpet fibers making any residual soot more robust to remove. Some soot, particularly on older carpets, maybe unnoticeable but still cause odors. If in doubt, try to avoid the affected area altogether.

When dealing with any fire restoration, SERVPRO technicians conduct thorough pre-testing at the beginning and for the duration of service. Pre-tests help us to understand the type of soots we are dealing with, as well as the effect of solvents on different materials and paints. Heavier solvents may be faster at dealing with a puff-back. However, they may also adversely affect the surface leading to repainting or refinishing, which is time-consuming. Therefore, using a light solvent on certain services may be more efficient.

Wherever there is soot, there is likely to be an accompanying odor. SERVPRO relies on cleaning methods to remove the odor, but there may be some articles of the home that can benefit from complete replacement. Ducts that suffer a puff-back are likely to be soiled on both outer and interior surfaces. Since replacement ducts are relatively cheap, we can usually remove the damaged ducts and replace them with fresh ones. Carpets are often restorable to a preloss condition using pre-conditioners, washing, and rinsing.

Should you discover evidence of a puff-back avoid causing further damage, contact SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs at (719) 574-2789.
