Know Your Odors: Controlling the Smells That Come With Fire Damage in Colorado Springs
For homeowners who suffer fire damage, one of the most devastating and noxious issues is the ongoing presence of odors. They serve as a reminder of the fire, and they also represent a potential health hazard.
Controlling those odors is a multilayered process, but the SERVPRO fire damage experts in Colorado Springs use a complete set of procedures to solve the problem. And that process starts with basic knowledge involving the nature and characteristics of odor particles.
As you might expect, odor particles are microscopic. They’re typically measured in microns, with a size range of 0.01 to approximately 4 microns.
As small as that number sounds, it becomes even more startling when compared to other tiny objects. For instance, the tip of a human hair measures 75-100 microns, making it dozens of times larger than a typical odor particle. That tininess is what allows odor particles to easily penetrate surfaces in your home after fire damage.
To eliminate them, deodorant particles must be used to penetrate those same surfaces. This allows them to combine with the odor particles and neutralize them.
This is where SERVPRO expertise comes into play. SERVPRO techs know how to create the right conditions for deodorant particles to work so the problem can be solved quickly and completely.
SERVPRO techs also use several other characteristics of odor particles to help eliminate smoke odors. One is the surface porosity of the penetrated materials—the more porous the material, the more likely it is to absorb odors. Another is the concentration of residue on penetrated materials. The more concentrated the residue, the larger the amount of surface area that is typically impacted.
The other two major factors are heat and the amount of exposure time. The longer the surfaces are exposed, the larger the number of odor particles that penetrate surfaces. And heat makes porous surfaces expand, which in turn allows odor particles to penetrate more deeply. When the heat is removed and the surfaces contract, the odor particles are left behind and trapped, and once again deodorant particles are the solution.
3 Steps to Prevent a Lint Fire
Using a vacuum to clean lint behind the dryer could prevent a lint fire.
Three Steps To Prevent A Dryer Fire
Many homeowners in Security, CO, are unaware that lint accumulates poses a dangerous fire hazard. Each time the dryer is used, it releases clothes particles that accumulate inside and around the dryer. When its accumulation is neglected, all it takes is a spark to begin a lint fire. Lint is highly combustible and is made up of:
- Synthetic fibers from dryer sheets
Here are three steps you can take to prevent a dryer fire.
1. Clean the Dryer Vent and Ensure Proper Ventilation
The hose connection on your dryer leads most of the lint through a pipe to the outside air. When the vent is covered by a mesh screen, the lint will accumulate, forming a combustible blockage. To ensure proper ventilation, make sure the damper is not covered by a mesh screen and that it is opening properly.
2. Check Behind the Dryer for Lint
It is easy to miss the lint behind the dryer because of how well hidden it can be. Often, this is a sign that the hose and vent are clogged. Using a vacuum to clean lint behind the dryer could prevent a lint fire. When this begins to happen, it is recommended to hire a professional service to clean your dryer vents.
3. Clean the Lint Filter Housing
Along with cleaning the lint filter after each use, clean its housing regularly to prevent lint inside of the dryer. One of the most common causes of dryer fires is lint trapped in the filter housing and the hidden corners of the dryer. Use a small brush and a vacuum cleaner to remove the hidden lint.
You can prevent a house fire by taking precautionary measures with flammable substances. Cleaning your dryer and having it serviced by a professional can keep your house safe from fire damage. If you have experienced a lint fire in your home, call a professional fire damage restoration service to clean and restore your property.
3 Elements of Furnace Maintenance
Furnace maintenance is the best way to prevent a furnace fire
Three Main Aspects Of Furnace Maintenance
Your Colorado Springs, CO, furnace works hard to keep your home at a comfortable temperature all year and needs regular maintenance to run smoothly. A poorly maintained furnace can cause a fire, and fire cleaning is more difficult and expensive than furnace maintenance. The following are the three main aspects of furnace maintenance.
A furnace is composed of many parts. One of the key components of routine maintenance is inspecting these parts to make sure they are in working order. The following are some, but not all, of the parts that should be inspected:
A professional can look over all parts of the furnace to ensure everything is in good condition and make any necessary repairs.
Although there are professionals available to help with both the fire cleaning and smoke cleaning that would be necessary after a furnace fire, it is easier and safer to prevent malfunctions in the fire place. Cleaning, in addition to the inspections discussed above, is imperative in keeping your furnace performing at its best. The heat exchanger, blower assembly, burners and filters all need to be cleaned, although some filters have to be replaced rather than cleaned.
The final aspect of furnace maintenance is repairing any problems that are found during the inspection. Simple issues, such as adjusting the thermostat and troubleshooting the pilot light, can often be done by homeowners. More involved repairs, including those involving the belts or motor, generally require a professional. If you smell gas, get yourself and your family out of the house and call for help.
Maintaining your home’s furnace—keeping it clean and in working order—is the best way to prevent a furnace fire and avoid the headaches associated with smoke and fire cleaning. Many homeowners may be able to perform routine maintenance tasks themselves, but others will need the help of a qualified technician who can carry out the tasks safely and alert the homeowner to any serious problems.
Are Your Fire Sprinklers Ready?
Fire sprinkler system in a Cimarron Hills, CO building
Three Steps To Prepare For An Unexpected Event
In the event that your business in Cimarron Hills, CO, may suffer a fire, it is important to ensure that your fire sprinkler system is fully functional and ready to protect your property before that happens. Routinely checking the reliability of your system by following these three steps is the best way to prepare for an unexpected event.
1. Conduct Regular Inspections
Sprinkler systems are made up of multiple parts and piping. Each part needs to be visually inspected at various intervals to make sure they are fit for use. Check with your local fire codes to know which inspections should be carried out monthly, quarterly, annually, and every five years. Inspections are largely visual, ensuring that parts are not worn out or cracked.
2. Follow a Testing Schedule
Testing is more involved than inspecting. Regularly testing fire sprinkler systems to confirm that they are working properly and reliably is essential in keeping your property safe. As with inspections, different parts of a system require testing more often than others. Check with your local fire codes to ensure you keep to the proper testing schedule.
3. Work With Professionals
The inspections and testing described above are not do-it-yourself endeavors. They should be carried out by fire protection professionals who can monitor and track how your system performs and recommend any repairs or replacements needed. Generally, most fire suppression systems need to be fully replaced after 10 years. After a sprinkler system is used in the suppression of a fire, professional damage restoration specialists are available to help in the fire sprinkler cleanup process.
Fires are unexpected, unpredictable, and destructive. Equipping your business with a quality fire sprinkler system, and taking care to maintain that system, go far in protecting your property from disaster. Inspections and testing may seem tedious, but the time and money spent on keeping your system ready to protect you is an investment worth making.
3 Items You Need to Throw Away After a Fire
Anything that has suffered severe fire damage, naturally, belongs in the trash
Items That Need To Be Discarded After a Fire
Attempting to remediate and recover from a home fire is an extremely stressful experience for any homeowner. One of the first things you need to do upon returning to your property in Cimarron Hills, CO, is sort through your belongings to determine which ones you can keep, and which ones you need to throw away. That being said, there are certain items that always must be discarded following a home fire.
1. Perishable and Non-Perishable Food Items
Any type of food item that is stored in permeable packagings, such as plastic or cardboard must be thrown away following a fire. The high heat can cause the packaging to melt into the food, contaminating it. Any visibly burned or charred food also needs to go in the trash. Perishable food items in the refrigerator might be okay if the fridge itself wasn't damaged in the inferno. Each of these food items needs to be assessed on an individual basis to determine whether or not you need to throw them away.
2. Burned Clothing, Towels, Bed Linens or Other Textiles
Anything that has suffered severe fire damage, naturally, belongs in the trash. Mildly or moderately burned linens and clothing should probably be discarded as well, even if you believe that you can save what's left. The chemicals from the fire and the substances used to extinguish it can irritate your skin. If you really want to attempt to save these items, make sure you clean them extremely thoroughly before using them again.
3. Damaged Medications
It's highly recommended that you throw away all of your prescription medications following a home fire. The high heat environment can alter their chemical structure, potentially rendering them useless or making them dangerous to consume.
Knowing what to keep and what to throw away following a home fire is incredibly important. Contact fire remediation specialists for more information or assistance recovering after a residential fire.

Furnace Puff-backs and Resulting Fire Damage in Security
Puff backs can occur when an oil burner malfunctions or suddenly ignites. The resulting pressure can push soots through ventilation ducts into the home environment. Typical evidence of a puff-back is uniform, soiling directly above venting ducts onto the high walls and carpeting below. Often the composition of these soils includes dry soot, wet soot, as well as some fuel oils. Puff-backs are not generally dangerous, but they can be tough to clean, given the variety of soiling. Sometimes walls need to be treated corrosively, which can remove paintwork. Equally, approaching puff-back soiling with just one method can be useful on some soots but spread around others, causing further damage.
Professional remediation and restoration for fire damage in Security are available should your home suffer from a puff-back. After calling SERVPRO, you can begin light-cleaning work on the soiling if you wish. Light-cleaning is dry vacuuming the walls and carpeting with a lightweight tool. Be careful to avoid stepping on areas of carpet that may contain soots. Foot traffic can compress carpet fibers making any residual soot more robust to remove. Some soot, particularly on older carpets, maybe unnoticeable but still cause odors. If in doubt, try to avoid the affected area altogether.
When dealing with any fire restoration, SERVPRO technicians conduct thorough pre-testing at the beginning and for the duration of service. Pre-tests help us to understand the type of soots we are dealing with, as well as the effect of solvents on different materials and paints. Heavier solvents may be faster at dealing with a puff-back. However, they may also adversely affect the surface leading to repainting or refinishing, which is time-consuming. Therefore, using a light solvent on certain services may be more efficient.
Wherever there is soot, there is likely to be an accompanying odor. SERVPRO relies on cleaning methods to remove the odor, but there may be some articles of the home that can benefit from complete replacement. Ducts that suffer a puff-back are likely to be soiled on both outer and interior surfaces. Since replacement ducts are relatively cheap, we can usually remove the damaged ducts and replace them with fresh ones. Carpets are often restorable to a preloss condition using pre-conditioners, washing, and rinsing.
Should you discover evidence of a puff-back avoid causing further damage, contact SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs at (719) 574-2789.

Our team can also remove items that do not appear to be destroyed to prevent them from being contaminated further. We can clean such things and prepare them for re-entry once we restore your home.
During a fire, various burning materials produce different chemical residues that can cause health effects to the property’s occupants. The smoke residues can also cause structural damage if not restored on time or professionally. Before cleaning the affected surfaces in your house, our restorers can test them to determine which cleaning method is suitable. During testing, we categorize materials as non-washable or washable. Our SERVPRO team can use water-based cleaning products to clean washable materials and dry cleaning methods to clean non-washable materials.
Items like curtains, carpets, and other fabrics often require specialized Stanton before a fire can easily ruin them. In some cases, our technicians can wash fabrics and shampoo carpets to restore them to their preloss state. We use different types of cleaning products to clean carpeting and upholstery. For instance, carpet and upholstery shampoos are blends of solvents, detergents, and cleaning agents for brightening all fabrics. When restorers mix them with water, they have a neutral pH and work well on cotton, wool, nylon, and other artificial fibers.
Clean air is another essential factor in fire damage restoration. The carbon, ash, smoke, and other airborne contaminants can cause health issues to the occupants. We can use High-Efficiency Particulate Air vacuums to clean the air. These devices have a type of filtration that removes 99.97 percent of all the particles that are 0.3 microns or larger from the air.

How SERVPRO Cleans Fire Damage in Colorado Springs Homes So Efficiently
The clean up of fire damage is more than showing up and taking away charred items and wiping away smoke residue. In fact, improper cleaning methods and using the wrong solutions can make the loss worse and more costly for homeowners.
SERVPRO technicians inspect the fire damage in Colorado Springs homes before the cleanup begins to track the source and extent the smoke traveled within the structure. In this way, residual smoke odors do not get missed during mitigation.
Different Types of Residues
Depending on the heat of the fire and the types of items consumed in the blaze, different types of smoke residues get left behind. SERVPRO techs test residues before cleaning to determine the best kind of cleaning agent to use. For example, things with plastic or rubber as part of their construction tend to leave behind sticky, greasy residues known as "wet smoke." They often require solvents to release their grip on surfaces. The use of incorrect cleaning agents can lead to more damage.
The improper cleaning of dry smoke is one that can destroy items or building materials that had restoration potential. This type of smoke has a dry, powdery look, and the techs use methods that do not use liquids to lift it off surfaces. When dry smoke encounters water or solution, it drives it into the surface made worse by using a scrubbing action, which in some cases, exacerbates the loss rendering the building materials or items unrestorable.
Depending on the scale of the fire loss, in some cases, thorough cleaning is enough to neutralize residual smoke odors. In cases of more severe damage, the techs remove charred items and dispose of items too burned for restoration. Different types of equipment specifically designed to eradicate odor molecules leave the house without any evidence of fire odor.
SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs at (719) 574-2789 handles any size fire damage in properties and using their equipment and restoration methods, makes the loss “Like it never even happened.”

Food and Personal Product Safety After a Colorado Springs Fire
A Colorado Springs household fire recovery has many moving parts. You moved your family and pets to a place of safety before the firefighters moved in with extinguishers and hoses. Once our team arrives, we may recommend moving items out and removing the water used to knock down the flames before other tasks. Our highly-trained technicians move from room to room, evaluating soot deposits and smoke drift, planning for removal of soiling and odors.
Often a homeowner wants to make a move to help with fire damage tasks in Colorado Springs. One of the jobs that seems straightforward is packing up foodstuffs and cleaning the shelves in the showers and bathrooms of soaps, moisturizers, and shampoos. Organizing these items in anticipation of returning them to your professionally cleaned and deodorized home feels like a good fit.
SERVPRO experts warn against assuming that food that appears to have survived the fire is safe to consume. Likewise, those expensive facial creams, medicines, and body washes might not be appropriate to save.
Even if the fire damage's origin site was rooms away, the fine yet jagged-edged soot quite probably drifted into the kitchen or pantry and sifted invisibly into and onto food. Boxed items like pasta and anything left out on countertops during a fire should be discarded. In your bath, the soap in the dish or cotton balls in a basket might now contain abrasive particles. The proof of this is the care SERVPRO technicians use when removing soot from a porcelain surface like a sink or tub. If done improperly scratching occurs.
Canned or jarred foods can become toxic because heat can spoil the contents even if tightly sealed. Seals themselves are suspect, as fine soot can “climb” the threads on a jar of food or bottle of shampoo and infiltrate the contents. The gaskets on a refrigerator or freezer might fail, allowing fire residues to invade the appliances even if they made it through the fire without long term loss of power or a significant rise in temperature.
Err on the side of caution. Resist returning foods and personal care items to your fire-damaged house unless the experts at SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs are confident the move is safe. Call us for fire damage mitigation, remediation, and advice on the dozens of decisions needed during recovery at (719) 574-2789.

How Understanding Smoke Behavior During A Blaze Eases Restoration In Colorado Springs
Our technicians have the expertise, experience and equipment to restore your home 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Proper Understanding of Fire Damage in Colorado Springs Eases Restoration
Separate fire incidents might not seem unique considering it is just flames, heat and smoke from casual observation. However, once the restoration processes start, the uniqueness of each incident becomes apparent. Failure to comprehend the dynamics in each incident can delay restoration or lead to unsatisfactory results. Involving professional FSRT, Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians helps because they have exposure from dealing with many incidents.
Understanding smoke behavior during the blaze helps ease restoration of fire damage in Colorado Springs. Smoke is produced because oxygen, fuel, and heat, which are the three aspects of combustion, are not balanced. The smoke is a combination of solids, gases, and aerosols which can be deposited on surfaces or penetrate materials complicating the restoration process. Our SERVPRO technicians check the pattern of deposits left and the extent they spread through the property to determine the kind of fire and the best restoration approaches.
Hotly burning fires damage most materials within a short while, but such damage is mostly limited to areas the flames reach. Shouldering fires may not cause devastating damage if extinguished quickly. However, the damage is widespread because they produce significant amounts of smoke that spread throughout the property. Restoring most smoke-damaged materials through restorative cleaning is possible. Our SERVPRO technicians start by separating affected contents into groups of unsalvageable, salvageable and questionable items. Such separation allows us to clean salvageable items on site and pack-out questionable items for advanced cleaning in our facilities, saving more items.
Cleaning contents and materials affected by fires helps reduce the cost of restoration. However, cleaning everything might not be practical. Various aspects can determine whether cleaning is a viable solution. Our SERVPRO technicians check the age of affected materials because older surfaces are harder to clean. We also check the material because synthetic fibers tend to attract more residues than natural fibers making them harder to clean. Porous materials also allow deeper penetration of residues or odor particles. Based on the evaluation we do, we can determine whether to abandon cleaning or adjust the turnaround schedule.

The chance of a fire damaging your home in Colorado Springs is not as high as it being affected by a small kitchen fire. Cleaning Soot Damage In Your Security Home's Carpets
SERVPRO Carpet Cleaning after a Small Fire in Security--"Like it never even happened."
Fire Damage Cleanup of Carpets and Soft Surfaces Is a SERVPRO Specialty
Among the devastation that a fire can cause to your Security residence, soot damage is a common thread between nearly all incidents of any size. Soot can spread out farther than the affected areas of your home, leaving you with a substantial mess to overcome once the blaze has been extinguished. This effect can prove challenging to remove from specific fibers and materials, namely from various types of carpeting.
While you certainly have many different fire damage effects to worry about in your Security residence after the extinguishment, your carpets throughout your home might not necessarily need removal and replacement. Much of the damage that occurs to this flooring, unless directly ignited, can get attributed to the soot and debris floating throughout the environment during the fire. If extensive water damage has also occurred, salvaging the carpets may not be possible.
Finding the right restoration company to help you clean up this mess does not have to be a challenging feat. Our SERVPRO professionals get uniquely trained to handle all manners of fire damages that affect homes and businesses, and therefore have the appropriate skillset to pull soot damage from the flooring materials like carpeting.
Our SERVPRO technicians have several approaches and processes for cleaning carpets, which is often the most suitable choice to restore the damage to this area of your home. Bonnet cleaning can sometimes be sufficient when the affected material is short pile carpet with soot damage that does not deeply penetrate into the subflooring and base of the fibers.
For soot, hot water extractions and our Showcase Premier Cleaning services can remove all of the damaging films from the fibers and restore your carpets to their original vibrancy. These cleaning services can prevent you from having to remove these materials in your house and have them later replaced, requiring possible out of pocket expenses and inconvenience.
There is nothing that can prepare a homeowner for the often widespread damages of a fire in their house. Fortunately, you can always depend on our SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs fire damage specialists to help you clean up the mess and get back to the way things should be, "Like it never even happened." Smoke and Fire Damage from a Kitchen Fire in Security Create a Horrible Odor
Kitchen fires can happen very quickly and spread. After the firefighters leave, contact SERVPRO for remediation services.
Team SERVPRO Arrives on the Scene Quickly After a Fire in Your Kitchen
Many residents in Security add meat to the family meal to ensure adequate intake of protein by everyone present. This same protein can cause severe problems if the person cooking it forgets it and allows it to burn. Catching fire and spewing flames out of your cookware does not need to happen for smoke production to overwhelm your kitchen, but when it does happen, it only increases the amount of overall damage sustained.
Rainy days during the Spring months can keep grilling endeavors indoors where fire damage in Security becomes more likely due to interruptions, as well. Outdoor activities can easily cause anyone to lose track of time and forget about the steaks left on the kitchen stove. It takes only a few minutes of extra heat from the stove to go from 'perfectly done' to zero visibility conditions developing inside your kitchen area.
Once we arrive, we set up powerful air movers. These machines move a large volume of air in a very short period. Our air scrubbers go one step further in reducing the amount of smokiness in your home. These machines filter out the particles that may have already passed into other parts of your residence and keep them from becoming constant reminders of a burnt meal.
All meat contains significant amounts of protein that begin producing an extremely acrid, bitter odor after reaching a specific temperature. The oil that often accompanies such food while cooking only adds to the problem. SERVPRO technicians can also perform thermal fogging in cases where the odor persists. The heated fog that carries neutralizing agents permeate the same areas the smoke entered, resulting in significant improvements to the indoor air quality.
Manual cleaning of all surfaces inside your kitchen protects them from soot's abrasive nature. We use special cleansers that cut through the greasiness and unique tools that then lift the mess off the area. After we clean everything and eliminate the smoke odor, without any trace of fire damage, everything in your home goes back to looking "Like it never even happened."
SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs can help your family after a bout of smoke and fire damage from a kitchen flare up. Contact us at (719) 574-2789 so we can assist you in getting your home back to normal again. We perform our services in and around the Calhan and Widefield areas.

Home Safety: Rodents are a fire hazard too
We are pleased to share an article written by Greg Geilman, President and CEO of South Bay Residential.
Home Safety: Rodents are a Fire Hazard, Too
Rodents may be labeled as pests, but they actually have the power to be more destructive than some may believe. They chew up wires, create the perfect kindling in the form of their nests, and can be the root cause of a truly terrible fire. The worst part is that homeowners may not realize just how much damage they're causing to the home until it's too late. Learn more about the habits of rodents and why they're not a threat to be taken lightly.
A rodent is going to chew on whatever happens to be around them when their teeth are coming in. If they don't chew then their teeth will actually get too long and they won't be able to eat. And because their teeth are always coming in, they tend to chew on a lot of things. A squirrel, mouse, or rat will even gnaw on hard elements of the home, such as metal pipes. So when a homeowner starts to hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet, they need to be aware that those feet are attached to some very active teeth.
An Electrical Disaster
When a rat cuts through the plastic insulation that protects the electrical wiring, it exposes nearby objects to the heat of the electricity. Fires aren't just destructive because of the evident flame damage, but also because of the smoke damage. The smell of smoke is notoriously difficult to remove, which means that even a fire that's put out quickly may cause more damage than homeowners realize — damage that may not be covered by a home insurance policy.
The Nature of the Fire
The fire is caused when the wire shorts out or when the heat of the electricity causes some else to catch flame. Insulation, nests, or other types of trash inside the walls of the home are the most common culprits behind the origin story of the fire, but there are times when a wire can spark close to a wooden beam and cause the whole home to catch flame. Experts believe that up a quarter of all fires with undetermined causes may have actually been due to a rodent infestation.
Attention and Prevention
While there are plenty of traps and repellents to be found at the store, consulting an expert is usually the best way to go in the case of rodent prevention or elimination. An owner certainly can go through their home to determine where the holes are so they can seal them up, but the chances they'll miss at least a few of the openings are rather high. And of course, homeowners should have plenty of smoke detectors to get the warning they need to exit the home in time.
Rodents may be small, but they can wreak some major havoc on the lives of property owners. To keep them out of the house, call a pro to either exterminate the pests or to prevent them from entering the home entirely.
Greg Geilman is a Los Angeles native of over 40 years and owner of South Bay Residential. Greg believes knowledge is power when it comes to staying safe at home, and that the "little" issues can snowball over time if left unchecked.
Countering Smokey Odors Arising from Fire Damage in a Residence in Colorado Springs
SERVPRO technicians have IICRC training and know how to thoroughly rid your home of bad odors left behind by a fire.
SERVPRO Can Help Restore Your Home after Fire Damage
Homes in Colorado Springs often contain many safety features, from tempered glass in windows to GFCI outlets throughout the house. These precautions, with the primary goal of protecting residents and their families, help save many lives and reduces the number of accidents experienced each year.
When a home catches fire in Colorado Springs, the fire damage sustained can remain minimized if the fire department arrives quickly. However, these professionals cannot combat the smoke the fire produces. In fact, the presence of smoke often alerts firefighters of additional hotspots that need their immediate attention.
During a fire, smoke ends up everywhere inside a home, even in relatively far away locations. This happens because the heat of the fire pushes the smoke and its particles out, and as it travels, heavier particles drop or cling to obstacles and barriers as it passes through and around them. Lighter particles, because they come in smaller sizes, can remain suspended in the air for more extended lengths of time.
Wherever smoke moves through your home during a fire, your floors end up covered in smokey, greasy soot. Hardwood floors require specialized treatments to keep their sheen from becoming marred. Soot particles can seem fine and unlikely to cause damage, but the physical properties at the microscopic level reveal their actual abrasive qualities. Chemical risks posed by soot include carcinogens, as well as acidic properties that can further destroy your belongings unless we strip it away.
Carpeting can slowly emit a smoke-laden odor after a fire occurred. Removing the embedded smoke particles can help reduce overall odors and make the interior much more pleasant. Carpet cleaning might not provide satisfactory deodorization in every situation, but thermal fogging by our Odor Control Technician (OCT) can produce significantly more powerful results. Fogging in this manner also counteracts smoke residue found wherever smoke initially traveled, providing a more comprehensive and complete deodorization.
SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs can be contacted by calling (719) 574-2789, which is our 24-hour service line. Serving the areas near and around Security, Green Mountain Falls, and Calhan, we can help your family restore your home after fire damage to its preloss condition.

What can we learn from the Colorado Springs Airport Fire?
Water and fallen ceiling tiles litter the airport terminal lobby area
The first phone call to our company came in around 2AM Tuesday, April 17th. The caller told us the airport suffered a large fire on the 3rd story of the terminal building. The fire was put out, but the water from the fire sprinklers and the water the firefighters used left all three levels of the terminal soaked, with several areas flooded with standing water.
By 4AM, we had an inspector on site to meet with airport leadership and come up with an action plan to reopen the airport by the following morning at 4:30AM. Over 30 flights had to be cancelled on the 17th and airport leadership and the mayor had vowed to open the airport by the next day – quite a tall expectation to meet!
By 8AM our crews started the drying process. The first step was to extract all the standing water, remove non-salvageable carpeting, and then install drying equipment. To make the terminal more comfortable for travelers, we installed temporary carpeting in the terminal so passengers did not have to walk over bare (and potentially slippery) concrete.
The airport opened at 2:30AM 4/18, 2 hours ahead of schedule. The airport director told us he was extremely satisfied with the outcome.
The cause of the fire still remains unknown and repairs will continue for likely many more weeks. If one of your properties suffers a fire, large or small, you can count on SERVPRO to get you back in business quickly and make the damage “Like it never even happened.”
Fire Damage Mitigation in Colorado Springs
Smoke can travel into many areas of the home leaving behind an unpleasant odor.
SERVPRO Uses Deodorization Methods to Rid Your Home of Foul Odors
Sometimes after a fire ignites inside your Colorado Springs home, there are more problems that get created than just burnt materials and contents. Smoke created by a blaze often travels to many areas inside the house. Smoke leaves behind soot residues and pungent, burnt odors.
After any severely burnt materials and contents get replaced, all of the soot residues inside the building get cleaned. SERVPRO's fire damage technicians in Colorado Springs use specialized chemicals when cleaning that help eliminate foul odors. If unpleasant aromas still exist, then a final deodorization stage takes place.
When deodorizing an area, specific chemicals get used for different situations. Various odors exist based on what materials get burned during the blaze. Some deodorization techniques use chemicals that bond and react with the foul odor particles and neutralize them. Other deodorants mask unpleasant smells with more appealing odors.
To start, we apply deodorants to the air and affected surfaces. Many times deodorization gets accomplished by using hand pumps or electric powered sprayers. In more extreme cases, advanced equipment gets used during the deodorization process.
If our SERVPRO restoration experts believe that spraying chemicals does not complete the job efficiently, then other equipment gets used to create the original environment that caused the burnt odors to exist in the first place. During a fire, combustion causes smoke particles to become microscopic and penetrate many different materials. We use specialized equipment to break down chemicals so that they penetrate materials in the same way that foul odor particles did.
One way to mimic smoke behavior is with a Vaportek system. A Vaportek deodorization system consists of a compound of natural oils sealed by a membrane. The compounds then volatilize into the air and pass through the plastic membrane. Then, air currents distribute the chemicals into the air which react with and neutralize odor molecules upon contact.
Other ways to dispense deodorants into the building in the same way smoke entered, is to use fogging methods. When using a fogging system, deodorizing products get dispensed as finely divided particles in a mist. Depending on the situation we use either a wet fogging or dry fogging system to disperse deodorants into the air.
After an advanced deodorization system gets used inside your home, we often use powerful box fans to ventilate the area, so that dense chemicals do not exist in the air. For professional assistance with smoke deodorization call SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs at (719) 574-2789 any time of the day.

Widefield Fire Damage Risks Heightened When Children Play With Fire
A lit fireplace and candles set the mood for the season. Enjoy the holidays while staying safe and protecting your family from fire. Contact SERVPRO.
Caution and Watchfulness are Key to Preventing Fires Around the Holidays
We are approaching the season of the year when Widefield families gather, and long-separated cousins enjoy hours of play as adults converse and catch up. As we retreat into our cozy homes and get a roaring fire going on the hearth, a dose of caution is wise. It takes only a brief period of inattention for a cheery fire to turn into a destructive force. We know this well because our technicians train to turn precisely this type of tragedy around fast.
Nearly 50,000 fires a year involve one or a group of individuals playing with fire. Families are not immune to this preventable cause of fire damage in Widefield. Most of the blazes involve children finding firestarters such as matches and lighters. More than 7000 home fires annually have been reported due to children experimenting with fire. Nearly 40 percent of these fires start in the bedroom, likely as the child or children play with a box of matches or a lighter in secret. About 43 percent of the fires were set by children under the age of 6.
SERVPRO urges our community to be aware of the risk of fire held in little hands. We are skilled and experienced in cleaning surfaces and restoring structures after a fire. Fire damage remediation is a core service for our company, but no one wants to live through the terror and potential for serious harm or even death that a home fire brings.
Keep matches and lighters locked up or in an inaccessible place at all times, but be vigilant when you invite guests over as they may bring their own firestarters and negligently leave them within reach of the children also attending the event. Your choice to burn candles or have a fire going in the fireplace requires that you also make sure all safety precautions are taken. A log that rolls out if a curious tyke knocks it with a poker and an upended candle are genuine fire risks as well.
If a fire does break out, get your friends and loved ones out of the home as soon as possible. Once the fire is extinguished and the authorities permit, our SERVPRO crews can arrive with fully equipped vehicles to assess the damage and begin putting your life back together again.
SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs is there for members of our community who experience fire damage even at the busiest time of the holiday season. Call (719) 574-2789 immediately after the last firefighter leaves so we can begin to restore your home.

Hard Lesson Learned When Bacon Unattended in Colorado Springs
Cooking food on the stove, especially with grease, should never be left unattended. Call SERVPRO to remediate after an accident.
SERVPRO's Quick Response to Your Emergency Gets Your Family Back into Their Morning Routine
Weekend mornings are busy times for families. Preparing for sports, outings, and work around the home requires a hearty breakfast. Unexpected events during the cooking of the morning meal sometimes draw the home chef away, with catastrophic results. If a grease fire brings your day to a halt, SERVPRO is ready to take charge of a seamless restoration.
You know bacon should not be left to fry on its own, but a bang and a scream in the family room pulls you away to settle the bickering between a couple of your children. The meat sputters, and grease ignites. As you rush back, you are greeted with a stovetop in flames. A chemical fire extinguisher snuffs the blaze, but the greasy smoke and soot already coats every surface in the kitchen and floats throughout the house. Call us before you exacerbate the situation because grease fire damage in your Colorado Springs home requires a professional cleanup.
Our SERVPRO crews arrive at your grease fire with years of experience and training in abating this type of disaster. We have the equipment, tools, and know-how to restore your home “Like it never even happened.” The crew member in charge assesses the damage, and the team gets to work. Burned cooking vessels and their contents go in a disposal bag. We evaluate the soot coating the surfaces to determine if it wipes away with one of our spray cleaners or if abrasive techniques must be used carefully. Then the work begins.
We know how smoke and soot move during a fire, and how chemicals used to extinguish it impact the cleanup. Expect us to inspect for hidden damage in cabinets, on window coverings, and in areas far from the fire, as ash and soot float freely. Window blinds receive an immersion cleaning; curtains bundle up for a trip to the laundry or dry cleaners. Hard, nonporous surfaces scrub clean, upholstery and carpeting undergo deep vacuuming unless the soot is too sticky. Walls and ceilings need cleaning following the proper protocol our techs learned in industry approved certification courses.
Odors may linger, and our team works with you and your perception of smoky smells to eliminate this final evidence that a grease fire occurred. Professional deodorizing sprays can take care of the problem, but we also offer thermal fogging in persistent cases, the deodorizing compound combusting in a heated chamber that recreates the fire conditions, the better to neutralize the smell.
SERVPRO of South Colorado Springs is familiar with efficient grease fire damage restoration, ready to transform a sooty mess back to your kitchen fast. Call (719) 574-2789 to have a crew of recovery experts scheduled to abate smoke, soot, charring and other harm at your home.
